Red Letter Festival Relay Run 2010 Information

Dear Red Letter Relay 2010 Runners:

The following information is very important so please pay attention, read all of it, and contact me (Jim Ellis) if you have any questions. My e-mail is jimdonaldellis@gmail.com

On Saturday August 28, the Red Letter Relay will be happening. 59 miles of running. This year, there are over 20 runners participating.

Info about why we run:

-The purpose of this relay run, is to help raise awareness against homelessness, poverty and domestic violence in Northwest Iowa. And to raise money for "The Bridge" in Orange City, a transitional house for women and children in difficult life circumstances.

-So, we get to run. Using our gift of running to help raise awareness & money.

-To Raise Awareness: Tell people you know that you are running, why you are running and what you are running for. Do something creative.

-To Raise Money: Each runner needs to get 5 sponsors. Contact 5 people, let them know what you are doing, and if they would like to sponsor you. Have them write checks out to "The Bridge." Collect it and get it to me before the run, or day of the run.

Info about the run:

-The relay begins in Sioux City, Iowa and ends in Orange City, Iowa. It is a 59 mile road course, going through Lawton, Moville, Kingsley, Remsen, Oyens, Carnes.

-The relay is currently slotted and scheduled at a 10-minute-mile-per-hour pace. You personally don't have to follow that pace, but realize if you run too fast you might have to wait for the next person to show up for the next leg of the relay.

-Know the course. Know your starting and stopping points in the relay (more info about your specific points below).

-Before the race, look up your starting and stopping points on google maps. (more info below).

-On the day of the race each person's starting and stopping points will be marked with bright colored lawn flags on the side of the course (even if those flags are removed, it is your responsible to know your starting and stopping points). We will also try to have helpers be at the starting and stopping points.

-Be at your starting point at least 30 minutes before your slotted time.

-Drive to your starting spot. If you drive yourself, we will be able to drive your car behind you as you run, so when you are done running, you can jump back in your car.

-We will be passing a baton of some kind.

-Most importantly, be safe and careful. Wear bright clothing so drivers can see you. During the entire course, there will always be a vehicle with flashing lights behind you to provide a more safe run.
